The Atelier

One workshop in Graz. Every piece made by hand, to order — nothing outsourced.

One workshop. No factory.

Waldart has a single address: a small workshop in Kalsdorf bei Graz, Austria. There is no production line behind it and nothing is outsourced — every piece is made here, to order, only after you purchase it. About ten business days later it leaves the workbench for your wall.

Every design begins in our studio and is finished on the workbench. Because the moss is set by hand, tuft by tuft, no two pieces ever leave the workshop identical.

From studio to workbench

How a piece comes to be

Five stages, all under one roof. Each one done by hand, each one taking the time it takes.

The preserved moss palette of greens laid out in the studio

Design in the studio

Every piece begins as a composition in our studio, drawn within the palette of preserved moss we actually keep on the shelf. A design is only released once it works in real material — not just on screen.

Sorting preserved Alpine moss tufts by hand

Selection

We work with preserved Alpine moss from European suppliers. Before a single tuft reaches the panel, it is chosen by hand — for colour, texture and shape. It is the slowest part of the work, and the one that decides everything after it.

Setting moss tufts onto the panel one by one

Setting by hand

The chosen tufts are set onto the panel one by one. The composition grows under the hands of the person making it, following the studio design — and answering the material where it asks to be answered.

Fitting the finished panel into its wooden frame by hand

Framing and numbering

The finished panel is fitted by hand into its frame — black or dark wood. On the workbench it receives its edition number: each design is limited to 25 pieces, and the certificate travels in the box.

Packing a finished piece with corner protection

Packing

Each piece travels in a double-wall carton with corner protection and a spacer that keeps the surface untouched. Inside the box: a care card and a small repair kit with spare moss tufts, should your piece ever need attention.

Preserved Alpine moss in its natural greens

Materials

Preserved Alpine moss

The material is real moss from the Alps, preserved so it keeps its colour and softness for years — sourced from European suppliers and kept in stock at the workshop in its full palette of greens.

Because it is a natural material, every tuft is slightly different. We treat that as the point, not a flaw: the variation is what makes a wall of preserved moss feel alive.

Moss Types

Not all moss is the same. From soft and seamless to bold and sculptural, each type brings a unique texture and feeling to your walls.

Soft & Uniform Texture

Creates a calm, cohesive visual surface ideal for large installations.

Rich Color Depth

Greens from deep forest to vivid spring — every shade preserved to stay true for years.

Sculptural Cushions

Rounded, three-dimensional pads that give pieces depth and relief.

Natural Variation

Every cushion grows unique — no two pieces are ever alike.

Seamless Carpets

Smooth, even surfaces that form the base layer of our designs.

Deep Forest Green

A dense, natural green that anchors every composition.

Iceland Moss

Ball Moss

Flat Moss

What handmade means for your piece

Edition of 25

Numbered at the workbench, with its certificate in the box.

A repair kit in every box

Spare moss tufts included — and the workshop repairs or replaces under the 5-year guarantee.

Natural variation

Moss set by hand is never uniform. No two pieces leave the workshop identical.
