The piece
A serene island of moss, tranquil within its dark embrace.
Atoll I captures the essence of an untouched island, where shades of green tell a story of quiet beauty. Grass-green and deep fir-green Iceland moss come together to form an organic coastline that stands out against a calming dark background. This natural piece invites you to pause and contemplate its gentle beauty. Each Atoll I is a unique creation, produced with care and attention in our Graz atelier.
Crafted using grass-green and deep fir-green Iceland moss, Atoll I is meticulously handcrafted in the Waldart atelier in Graz, Austria. Each piece reflects the natural variation found within the moss, ensuring an unrepeatable creation each time.

Atoll gathers its energy at the centre and leaves a darker margin around it. The composition feels contained, like a small landscape with a world of its own.

Every Waldart palette starts outdoors: which greens sit next to each other, where light catches, how much empty space a surface needs. The first two images are nature studies for this design family; the others are photographs from our walks. The panels themselves are made from preserved moss.
An old beech stump: pale, open wood in the middle, a dense ring of moss and small mushrooms around it. The bright centre and the darker margin hold each other in place, just as in Atoll.
A wood ant follows the line where bare wood meets moss. The most life is always at the edge of the bright centre.
Only the tips catch the light. That is why the brightest green appears sparingly, as an accent rather than a surface.
Moss never stops in a straight line. Colour fields fray into each other, and we let them.
Water makes the spaces between stones visible. Empty space is part of the composition, not what is left over.
