The piece

Feel the calming embrace of nature’s spiral.

Helix I draws you into a world where nature’s quiet strength is the focal point. As the spiral of ball-moss cushions unfurls gracefully across the grass-green Iceland moss, it evokes a sense of balance and tranquility. The depth and texture offer a refreshing escape from the mundane, suggesting a perpetual journey of form and movement. Whether framed in black or dark wood, the piece stands as both a nod to and a quiet rebellion against the chaos outside its borders.

Good to know

Is it real moss?

Yes, Helix I is made with real preserved moss, handcrafted to order in our Graz atelier, Austria.

Do I need to water it?

No, Helix I requires no water, light, or maintenance. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and high humidity.

What sizes are available?

Helix I is available in diameters of 40 cm, 60 cm, and 80 cm, with a choice of black or dark wood frames.

Can I hang it in a sunny room?

It's best to keep it out of direct sunlight to maintain its color and texture over time.

One family. One shared world.

Helix winds around its centre without closing into a circle. Every turn revisits the same direction at a different distance, making repetition feel like growth.

04 / Field notes

Where the compositions begin.

Every Waldart palette starts outdoors: which greens sit next to each other, where light catches, how much empty space a surface needs. The first two images are nature studies for this design family; the others are photographs from our walks. The panels themselves are made from preserved moss.

The spiralling bark furrows of an old sweet chestnut trunk
01 / Twist

The bark of an old sweet chestnut does not run straight up: its furrows wind slowly around the trunk. Every turn comes back to the same side, a little higher. Helix grows the same way.

A clematis stem spiralling around a hazel twig with feathery seed heads
02 / Tendril

Old man's beard has wound itself around a hazel twig, turn after turn, each at a different distance. At the end of the stem, the feathery seeds of the year.

Close-up of moss on bark with bright green tips
03 / Light

Only the tips catch the light. That is why the brightest green appears sparingly, as an accent rather than a surface.

Moss spreading across grey limestone, a single leaf above
04 / Edges

Moss never stops in a straight line. Colour fields fray into each other, and we let them.

A woodland stream running between mossy stones and fallen leaves
05 / Intervals

Water makes the spaces between stones visible. Empty space is part of the composition, not what is left over.
